Six sessions, 2 hours each via Zoom.
Thursdays from 4/08 to 5/13 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern (11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific).
Tuition is $250.
Enrollment will be limited to twelve.
Poet and teacher Kim Addonizio writes, “Poetry is an intimate act. It’s about bringing forth something that’s inside you, like the body. The body is, after all, the starting point of what we know.”
For this six-week workshop, we will use the body to guide us on a journey of self-discovery—to spend time studying what our bodies, minds, and hearts have experienced, seen, felt, remembered, recorded. It is through these, the modest truths of our lives, that the bigger, more enduring questions can be posed and potentially answered.
The course will have a different theme each week: Skin, Mind, Heart, Lungs, Hips, and Root. Through the lens of the body, we will explore the larger themes at work: current events as experienced through our bodies, our differences, our ultimate similarities. Memory, love, family, nature, all part of the richness of lives lived, of places and people seen, known, loved, and lost.
Each week, we will start with a short writing prompt to open the creative doorway, and then proceed with reading some examples of poetry that touch on the theme of the week, have a lesson on craft, do another short writing exercise, and then spend time as a group or in breakout groups (depending on the number of participants) offering positive and constructive feedback on the poems we have written based on the homework. Before our course begins, all participants will be emailed a packet of the poems to be read during the workshop. This workshop is perfect for people who have never written poems but are curious, or for people who have written many. We all contain multitudes and have much to learn and to give.
