Almost sixty eager Satan’s Chamber readers gathered at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, a popular B&B in Ashland, Oregon, to celebrate the books’ West Coast Book Launch. Co-Author Molly Best Tinsley read the Prologue to a captivated audience then answered more than a dozen questions. Top of mind for the readers was how could authors co-write a book from opposite coasts? Molly explained that she and Karetta Hubbard respected the three-hour time difference and set up phone calls every Tuesday to discuss plot and the chapters they had written to date. A follow up question was how did you come up with the complicated story? Molly noted that once the characters were identified, it was they who led us deep into the story and ultimately dictated the ending. One guest had traveled to Sudan and claimed that Molly and Karetta “got it exactly right,” referring to the sensory details of the scenes. One couple who heard Molly’s reading purchased ten copies of Satan’s Chamber, which took care of their holiday gift list—well before Thanksgiving, too! Other pleased readers might consider Satan’s Chamber for their gift planning too. http://www.amazon.com/Satans-Chamber-Molly-Best-Tinsley/dp/0984141200/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257427033&sr=8-1 Deedie and David Runkel, the innkeepers of Anne Hathaway’s served adapted “Sudanese” recipes consisting of dips, figs, cheese and whole wheat pizza. The recipe for the most favorite dip follows. Sudanese Peanut Dip 1 cup smooth peanut butter (organic, no additives best) Whiz in processor until blended, add 1/4 cup of hot water. Wonderful for crudites, but also on flat bread with tomatoes. Enjoy! Karetta and Molly wish to thank all of the enthusiastic friends and readers who came out to support Satan’s Chamber at the West Coast Book Launch in Ashland, Oregon.
This past Tuesday Molly gave an interview on the Jefferson Exchange, a local radio show in Ashland. The lively conversation covers literature, Africa, movies, oil, and much more. It can be heard free by podcast, available on the radio show’s website: http://www.ijpr.org/onlineaudio2.asp?SectionID=1012&programId=11
Even though it was off-season, a small crowd gathered at Doe Bay Resort to listen to Molly read the Prologue from Satan’s Chamber and answer questions. Molly began by stating that she couldn’t think of two places more different than Orcas Island and Sudan. The former is surrounded by water, lush, green, cool, and moist. It is utterly safe, a gentle, homogeneous, artistic community. Northern Sudan is barren desert, hot, dry shades of brown. Sudan is a conglomeration of many different tribes, and though individuals are kind and generous, there is mistrust among the groups. Molly then explained the significance of the title noting that Satan’s Chamber is considered a metaphor for the country, yet the tenacity and resilience of the people and their quest for peace demonstrate that the Sudan can also be considered “God’s Garden.” Molly noted that to get to Orcas Island was quite a trek. But once there it was worth the trip. There are wonderful organic vegetables grown on the island; huge cinnamon roles; the amazing Morgan State Park and Mt. Constitution–from which you can see the San Juan Islands assembled in the ocean like stepping stones. And of course, the people, who opened their hearts and minds were the most important part of the journey.
