1. Molly on Pacifica Radio
Molly was recently interviewed on Beautiful Struggle, an arts and social action show on Los Angeles’ KPFK radio station. Molly followed a discussion with Zebiba Shekhia, an Eritrean refugee and founder of Healing Bridges, an organization dedicated to helping women and children in Africa.

One of the mantras of Beautiful Struggle is “crush hopelessness” and Molly discussed the connection between that theme and the Satan’s Chamber character, Kendacke. In the novel Kendacke has taken on the seemingly impossible mission of unifying the disparate tribes of Sudan, and her leadership could serve as a powerful inspiration for young African women. Molly also encouraged listeners to help by living responsibly and being aware of the extent to which our western way of life depends on exploitation in places like Africa.

Please visit http://healingbridges.org to support Zebiba Shekhia’s mission to build schools in Sudan.

2. Spotlight: In Other Words and Murder on the Beach
In our ongoing effort to spotlight independent bookstores we will be sharing information about the bookstores who have agreed to carry and promote Satan’s Chamber.

Murder on the Beach

Locals in Delray Beach, Florida flock to Murder on the Beach, a mystery book and entertainment store, for all things intriguing: new, used, and collectible books, audio books, mystery jigsaw puzzles, mystery dinner games, and great gifts for the book lover. This is no quaint niche mystery enterprise, however: Murder on the Beach is a leader in books signed by Florida authors.

If you’re located near Delray Beach and are planning a party sometime soon, consider Murder on the Beach’s audience interactive murder mystery parties. A troupe of improvisation and stand-up comedians come to your location to regale guests and solve the party’s mystery.

Karetta will be signing books and hosting a discussion at Murder on the Beach on January 14, 2010, at 7pm. All are invited to attend. Visit http://www.murderonthebeach.com for more!

In Other Words

In Other Words Women’s Books and Resources is the last surviving non-profit feminist bookstore in the United States. Located in Portland, Oregon, In Other Words is home to a new resource center that is designed to network and connect people to local services, classes, and organizations, and also helps people find rides out of town, roommates, housing, musicians, artists, and much more.

In Other Words is a volunteer-driven organization with more than fifty people whose dedication, diverse experiences, and time helps build and sustain the store and community space. The leadership is made up of primarily young activists who look to In Other Words for connection, community, and a political home.

Molly will be reading and signing at In Other Words on January 30, 2010, from 4-6pm. All are welcome. Learn more about In Other Words at http://www.inotherwords.org.

3. Satan’s Chamber at the home of Audrey Sheppard and Charles Zeitlin
Please click here to view a larger version of the photos from this weekend’s party.

The beautiful home of Audrey and Charles Zeitlin was a welcome respite from the bitter cold as almost sixty guest assembled in front of a warm fire to hear Karetta discuss Satan’s Chamber.

Karetta shared a compelling synopsis of Satan’s Chamber and discussed writing, books, and collaboration with the guests. Karetta was appreciative of the warm praise and thoughtful commentary from so many new readers.  Many guests purchased books and volunteered to help spread the word about Satan’s Chamber (and the Sudanese peanut dip was a favorite!).

If you would like to make Karetta and Molly’s signature Sudanese Peanut Dip from Deedie and David Runkel, the innkeepers of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Ashland, Oregon, please visit http://www.satanschamber.com.

4. Karetta speaks with Bethesda-based book club
A spirited and lively book group gathered at Lucy Cook’s last night to hear Karetta discuss Satan’s Chamber. The members of the group asked provocative questions about the characters, the political situation in Sudan and the mysticism surrounding Jebel Barkal and Kendacke.

One member wanted to know whether Kendacke was based on a real person or part of the fiction of the book (A. fictional but based on historical fact). Another wanted to know how difficult is was to co-write a book (A. not at all) and several members mentioned their favorite character(s). After agreeing that Satan’s Chamber would make a great movie, the members proceeded to “cast” the characters. The upshot was that sometime in the near future there will be a contest on the website asking readers to vote on their choice of actors to play the various roles.

The evening ended with the enthusiastic group exclaiming that Satan’s Chamber is a really good read and that they would definitely “talk it up among their friends.”
